SATEC Dynamic Containment Solutions

National Grid has recently introduced the Dynamic Containment frequency response service to regulate frequency response ancillary services more effectively.

Similar to its predecessor, the Firm Frequency Response (FFR) scheme, Dynamic Containment is designed to manage the network of providers offering frequency balancing solutions.

These providers often utilize battery energy storage systems (BESS), commonly found on photovoltaic (PV) farms and other solar installations.

Description

Dynamic Containment is a fast-acting frequency response service designed to maintain grid stability. It quickly and precisely adjusts power output to stabilize system frequency, preventing deviations beyond the statutory ±0.5Hz limit during sudden demand or generation fluctuations.

The dynamic containment guidelines outline the technical requirements for fast frequency response, including specific metering and reporting obligations to be fulfilled and transmitted to National Grid's data concentrator.

Submitting Dynamic Containment reports Using SATEC PRO Series Meters

The meter of the PRO Series - PM335 and EM235 have been uniquely adjusted to comply and exceed the requirements for monitoring, specified in Dynamic Containment.

This includes:

  • Providing frequency readings at a 4 decimal resolution
  • Providing a bespoke data log for the required parameters to be sent to the data concentrator

The PRO meter is an extremely advanced analyzer, compliant with the Class S category of power quality analysis, per IEC 61000-4-30.
